UMS 2015
UMS 2015 Artist Interview with Povi
In one week from today, the 2015 Underground Music Showcase presented by Schomp MINI will kickoff on South Broadway. Over 400 local and national bands and artists will perform at over 20 venues, showcasing practically every genre of music alive today.
One of the leading ladies at the UMS 2015, Povi, will be performing for the crowds. We spoke with her about where she found her talent, what we can expect and where we can find her intermingled in all the UMS chaos.
How did you first get into music?
Povi: I was always a dreamer, drifting off during class, vicariously living through the movies I so often escaped to. Music always had a significant effect on me – it created the same escape. I started off by playing the harp, then, gradually, singing took over everything. One thing music has always done for me is express things in ways that I was unable to express at that time, and it was like therapy for me. I want to be able to do the same thing, and do what I love to do everyday and share that with people that need it. That’s my mission.
How would you explain your music to someone who’s never listened to it before?
Povi: I would probably say that it’s got a twist of R&B but has a hip-hop influence. It’s the type of music you can groove to. – it’s feeling music. When I write these songs, it’s always freestyle through it. I rarely ever have a premeditated conception of what I want to write about. It just comes from my heart and whatever I’m going through at that time.
How does it feel to be performing at this year’s UMS?
Povi: It kind of feels like a welcome home! When I was 19 I moved to California and decided eight months ago that I would move back [to Colorado] to be closer to my grandpa during his last days. So being back home for less than a year and being able to play UMS feels amazing. I’m just really grateful to have support from my home territory.
Give us a sneak peek of what to expect from your set.
Povi: I don’t want to give anything away but I will say this: I want to be transparent throughout my career with people, and just show who I am, because I’m just like you and I always feel like there is this distance between the people on stage and the people in the audience. I just want to close that gap. So you will get more insight into my past and present!
Where and when can we find you at the UMS this year?
Povi: You can find me on Saturday, the 25th, on the main stage at this year’s UMS. I’ll keep everything up-to-date on my socials when I find out my set time!
