Oko Tygra is Ready for Their Second UMS Appearance
With the 2015 Underground Music Showcase kicking off tomorrow, we can’t help but start putting our daily schedule together of which bands and artists to check out.Denver-based “dreaminess” band Oko Tygra performed at last year’s UMS for the first time, and the group is back again, only taking the main stage by storm this time around. We spoke with Oko Tygra’s lead singer, Joshua Novak, about what we can expect from the upcoming performance.
Tell us about your band. How did it start and what was your mission within music?
Joshua Novak: We became a band a little over a year and a half ago. Our mission was reinvention. We knew we wanted to do something big and that’s what we got.
How would you explain your music to someone who’s never listened to it before?
JN: We think we sound like 1984 dream pop. Our inspiration is definitely in the nostalgic and the style is in the details. Think Cocteau Twins, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Slowdive, etc.
How does it feel to be performing at this year’s UMS?
JN: It truly feels amazing. Like we’ve said many times, UMS is our favorite weekend of the year. This time we are playing the main stage, so it’s going to be an important one for us and one we surely remember.
Give us a sneak peek of what to expect from your set.
JN: …epic dreaminess, plus a few new songs to debut.
Where and when can we find you at the UMS this year?
JN: We are on the Main Stage on Sunday, July 26th.
